We are thrilled to share that two Open Hand Studio of CannonDesign projects received bronze awards in the 2024 Anthem Awards. The projects, Jamaa Birth Village's Birth Center & Postpartum Retreat Haven and the Ladder Alliance's Success Store, were recognized for inspiring progress and driving meaningful social impact in their communities.

Jamaa Birth Village
Jamaa Birth Village’s future Birth Center and Postpartum Retreat Haven will be the first free-standing birth center in St. Louis. Last year, Jamaa’s midwifery practice achieved 0% maternal-infant mortality, 99% full-term births, and was recently supported by Elaine Welteroth’s birthFUND.

Jamaa Birth Village's Birth Center & Postpartum Retreat Haven won a bronze award in the Health - Community Space category. The 5,000-sf facility in Ferguson, Missouri, will revolutionize postpartum care for Black women by addressing critical healthcare disparities and inequities. Inspired by African design principles, the center embraces a communal layout and offers holistic care, ensuring Black mothers not only survive but thrive post-childbirth.

These projects were led by Open Hand Studio, our firm's public interest design arm focused on designing and scaling solutions that address essential human needs.

The Ladder Alliance Success Store is where graduates of Ladder Alliance programs can shop for professional outfits that help them feel empowered in their next job interview or career.

The Ladder Alliance's Success Store received a bronze award in the Education, Art & Culture - Community Space category. Located in Fort Worth, Texas, The Ladder Alliance empowers domestic violence survivors and low-income women with tools for self-sufficient, successful lives. The redesigned Success Store provides women with professional attire in exchange for their attendance in education programs, including computer skills and professional development, to open new pathways to success.

Delivering work worthy of these awards is no small feat, and we are so proud of everyone who continues to contribute to Open Hand Studio and its mission. The Anthem Awards saw more than 2,300 submissions from 34 countries. Our team shares this monumental stage with some big names like the Foo Fighters, Selena Gomez, ESPN, Google, Pepsi and more.

Launched in 2021 by The Webby Awards, The Anthem Awards honor the purpose & mission-driven work of people, companies and organizations worldwide. By amplifying the voices that spark global change, the awards program defines a new benchmark for impactful work that inspires others to act in their own communities. Awards are given across seven core causes: Diversity; Equity & Inclusion; Education; Art & Culture; Health; Human & Civil Rights; Humanitarian Action & Services; Responsible Technology; and Sustainability, Environment & Climate.

We proudly accept these awards and look forward to further leveraging Open Hand Studio and our Living-Centered Design ethos to deliver similarly impactful work in the future.
