The Community School STEAM Center in St. Louis, MO is designed to spark curiosity and hands-on learning for students across all ages. By expanding instructional spaces and improving accessibility, the new addition empowers students and teachers to innovate and collaborate in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

The STEAM Center features upgraded science classrooms, a versatile maker space, a drama classroom and a significantly enhanced woodshop and fabrication lab. As part of the curriculum for students beginning at age three, the building allows students to actively engage with science by exploring the natural environment, participating in lab experiments and diving into technology through robotics.

The project introduces distinct upper and lower division classrooms along with dedicated collaboration areas. These spaces allow teachers to circulate more freely as students work on projects, making it easier to support each student individually.

At Community School, students begin developing their woodworking skills as early as senior kindergarten, gradually bringing their ideas to life throughout the year. The new woodshop features two separate areas — one designated for power tools and another for direct instruction and hand tool activities. This layout increases safety by keeping all power tools isolated and reducing students’ exposure to dust.
