Detail Oriented is a video series where teammates across the firm spotlight a specific technical element that elevated a project from great to exceptional. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the ingenuity, precision and problem-solving that quietly shape our most impactful work.

Our latest episode highlights a project where the design plays a supporting role — intentionally “disappearing” so that people walking through the space are fully immersed in the experience.

The Museum of Tolerance Social Lab is a space where people come together to take bias tests and have tough but important conversations about the world today and how to combat hate and division. Among the project’s most striking technical achievements is an illuminated metal coil mesh veil that transforms the environment into something immersive and constantly shifting. Video and light are projected directly onto the veil, causing it to seemingly disappear at moments and re-emerge at others, allowing visitors to move through and shape their own experience.

Watch episode five below to hear from Mimi Lam, senior designer in our Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign, who shares how the team used light, material and illusion to make architecture seemingly disappear.
