The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (JHU APL) Building 201 was one of only two projects worldwide to be honored in the Scientific Equipment & Furniture Association (SEFA) Lab of the Year awards program.

The Lab of the Year Award is the most long-standing and prestigious laboratory award in the world — recognizing only the most innovative laboratories for design excellence and execution.

“We are so thrilled to see Building 201 garner the recognition it deserves,” said Steve Blair, director of CannonDesign’s science & technology practice. “This building ushers in a new era of exploration, collaboration and innovation where scientists can do their best work.”

This is CannonDesign’s sixth time being recognized in the Lab of the Year program — a testament to our science & technology team’s skills, expertise and drive to continuously design daring solutions to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. Previous CannonDesign projects recognized by the program include CJ Blossom Park (2018), Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research Cambridge (2017), Washington State University’s Veterinary and Biomedical Research Building (2014), University of California Riverside’s School of Medicine Research Building (2012) and Texas Children's Hospital Feigin Center (2010)

About JHU APL and REDD

JHU APL is a renowned research and development center focused on solving complex challenges in national security, space exploration, public health, and other critical fields, APL is a not-for-profit division of Johns Hopkins University and the largest university-affiliated research center in the United States. Occupying Building 201 is the Research and Exploratory Development Department (REDD). REDD is APL’s research engine. A powerhouse of scientific thinking applied engineering, and advanced fabrication, REDD’s team of more than 650 researchers is recognized as one of the most dynamic and influential research groups in the world.

About Building 201

Building 201 is a revolutionary research engine that enables JHU APL scientists to innovate beyond the boundaries of traditional research and development. Whether exploring the origins of the universe, developing new materials for energy storage, or uniting the capabilities of human and machine intelligence, Building 201 provides researchers with an array of lab types, tools and capabilities — all under one roof.

The building’s overall design promotes scientists’ interaction through openness, transparency and visual connectivity. It leverages workplace strategies to integrate lab and office environments and helps increase connections to the university and outside industries.
