Joy is an essential part of childhood, creating experiences and memories that shape the adults we become. That’s why, when designing spaces, every step and every turn has a purpose. When we say we design for the "Whole Child, Every Child," we mean it — we design for every experience and every ability, infusing moments of joy to nurture healthy development.

Whole Child, Every Child is a comprehensive framework we introduced in 2020, developed through research to enhance buildings, spaces and experiences for kids. Created in partnership with healthcare providers, educators, family members, kids and designers, the framework applies to any environment, including healthcare facilities, learning spaces, parks, museums and everything in between. It’s rooted in a deep understanding of the developmental needs of children, encompassing their social, emotional and physical well-being, and how the design of space can help them thrive, grow and experience joy with dignity and choice.

Testimonials

  • Children have no agency over their own lives, so there’s a great responsibility that comes with designing spaces for them. But it’s also really special to think about experiencing the world through the wonder of childhood. It’s the closest thing we have to magic, and it should be cherished, preserved and celebrated in whatever way we can.
