Metal Architecture published Elliot Glassman's piece, "Beyond the Glass Box: Quality Daylighting Design," in its August/September 2026 issue. Elliot, our building performance leader, argues that as buildings have grown more transparent, it's become clear that more glass doesn't automatically mean better daylight.
The article makes the case for climate-based daylight modeling and glare analysis over renderings that look appealing but don't reflect how light actually behaves in real conditions. Drawing on project examples, including the Chemistry Building at UW-Milwaukee and D'Youville University's Health Professions Hub, it shows how the right amount and orientation of glazing, paired with exterior shading, can improve daylight quality, occupant comfort and energy performance all at once.
