We are grateful to share that the Northwell Health Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion was named a finalist in this year's Healthcare Design Showcase competition.

The Northwell Health Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion is an addition to Northwell Health’s flagship campus on Long Island. The 280,000-sf pavilion serves as a new modern centerpiece for Northwell Health, replacing and expanding existing facilities with updated clinical spaces and technologies in support of surgical services and inpatient critical care. It contains18 operating rooms, including three hybrid ORs, and 132 intensive care unit (ICU) rooms.

Folding the pavilion into the existing campus’ aesthetic was a primary goal, as well as physically linking the pavilion to the existing hospital. The design team sought to blend the materiality and scale of the existing campus buildings to create an inviting facility. The experience starts at the sheltered entry court that leads to a light-filled lobby. The two-story lobby is framed by a luminous glass bridge connecting the surgical suites and first floor ICU to the hospital. The bridge hovers over the lobby’s main reception desk and forms a glowing backdrop and ceiling beyond a vertical slice of daylit space.

Across all 132 patient rooms, the design features a universal clinical room design, an optimized clinical platform for care delivery from patient to patient and from one specialized unit to the next, promoting cross-training and staffing efficiency. Additionally, there are daylit team touchdown spaces along the building exterior and within the semi-restricted surgical suite so clinicians can attend to documentation and collaborate.
