Acting as a new campus centerpiece and a hub for some of Northwell Health's renowned specialty services and surgical teams, the Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion is a striking addition to the institution's flagship North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) campus on Long Island.
As part of NSUH's Level 1 trauma and academic center, the new 288,000-square-foot surgical pavilion represents the future of healthcare for Long Island and Queens residents. The new pavilion contains 18 operating rooms, including three hybrid operating suites, 132 intensive care unit beds and a new lobby for the renowned Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital. The building provides state-of-the-art clinical facilities that replaced and expanded existing facilities at the hospital in support of vital clinical programs in surgical services and inpatient critical care and specialty service lines.
Architecturally, the design team sought to blend the materiality and scale of the existing campus and create an open and inviting facility where patient experience was paramount. This starts at the sheltered entry court that leads to a gracious light-filled lobby. The two-story lobby is framed by a luminous glass bridge that connects the surgical suites and first floor ICU to the renovated hospital PACU. The pavilion's exterior has a large sun shaded, multi-story window which references the Northwell Health logo; a constellation symbol.
The pavilion’s programming effort began with clinical visioning exercises for care delivery in the perioperative environment as well as the critical care unit to solve for existing operational challenges. The design team developed workflows that informed a baseline program rooted in a clear understanding of regulatory requirements for each department and insights on clinical best practices brought forward by our in-house clinician team.
This resulted in modernized clinical spaces and technologies that support vital Northwell Health programs in surgical services and inpatient critical care. The addition significantly enhances patient care, increases capacity, creates an efficient connection to the existing hospital for optimal operational and clinical flow, provides future flexibility by utilizing universal operating room design — and provides a patient-centric, concierge model of care.
In the surgical suite, 18 new operating rooms replace undersized, antiquated facilities and provide the appropriate clinical environment for the complexity of the cardiac, orthopedic, neurological, transplant, and trauma cases that NSUH sees today and will see into the future. Of the 18 ORs, three Hybrid ORs provide state-of-the-art intraoperative imaging to support highly complex cardiac, vascular, and neurological procedures. Above the surgical platform, three floors of intensive care units provide the patient space, integrated technologies, team collaboration zones, and robust clinical support to deliver best-in-class clinical care to the critically-ill patients that depend on specialized intensive care settings to heal.
The addition of the Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion repositions the NSUH campus for the future of care delivery, providing a leading-edge clinical space that merges clinical operations, technology integration and experience strategy to create a new home for some of the most challenging care needs at this flagship facility.
With future planned phases (including a replacement post-anesthesia care unit adding to the new clinical care settings supporting the care team), the cumulative impact of the new Pavilion is already redefining care in the New York metropolitan region — enhancing Northwell Health’s delivery of best-in-class care to patients and their families well into the future.
