The Glade in Forest Park, which consists of Steinberg Pavilion and Ice Rink in St. Louis, Missouri, was recognized with a prestigious Architectural Review Future Project Award in the Sports category.

The Future Project Awards “celebrate excellence in unbuilt and incomplete projects, and the potential for positive contribution to communities, neighborhoods and landscapes around the world,” according to Architectural Review.

Steinberg Rink and its neighboring Pavilion are being reimagined as The Glade, a space for all-season fun that is equitable, environmentally sound and economically sustainable. The design restructures the Pavilion, originally built in 1957, to include a party room, rink-side café, multipurpose room, terrace and rooftop café. CannonDesign is serving as project prime and architect of record, with Snow Kreilich Architects serving as design architect and Hoerr Schaudt as landscape architect.

More than 50,000 St. Louis residents were involved in the early design phases, particularly those who have not frequented this part of Forest Park in the past. The project team was focused on opening up the area to a broader range of needs and perspectives. Together, these efforts create a renewed public place defined by flexibility, inclusion and shared experience. It is set to open in Fall 2026.

To reimagine the ice rink in a more sustainable manner, it takes an all-electric approach supported by a geothermal well field that functions as a heat sink for both the building and ice equipment. Highly efficient ice systems further reduce operational demands, creating a forward-looking facility that aligns recreation with responsible energy use.

The project team was recognized at the Architectural Review Future Project Award ceremony in Milan in April.
