In a pivotal moment for the recovery of Ukraine's healthcare infrastructure, Sunflower Network has officially opened a new pediatric facility in Brody, Ukraine.

Our team is honored to have helped design the new pediatric hospital — the first newly built hospital in Ukraine since Russia's invasion began in 2022 —in partnership with Sunflower Network, Hines, Pelli Clarke & Partners, Northwell Health, Climatic, Stanford Health Care, UCLA Health and other key partners.

Located on the Brody Central City Hospital campus, the new pediatric care building is municipality-owned and operated by the hospital's existing team of more than 300 medical professionals. The facility will help modernize pediatric care at Brody Central City Hospital, moving children's services into a purpose-built space with upgraded equipment, improved treatment spaces and clinical readiness support from Northwell Health.

The project will serve more than 120,000 annual patients across Western Ukraine as wartime displacement exacerbates the strain on existing healthcare infrastructure. We supported Sunflower Network on the project through Open Hand Studio, our firm's award-winning incubator for public interest design.

Testimonials

  • Our doctors and nurses have continued caring for children through years of war and displacement. This new (hospital) gives them what they deserve, a modern, purpose-built space where they can provide care with more confidence, dignity and efficiency.

For the families of Brody and the many displaced families who now depend on this region, its opening is a critical step forward.

Tymus Myroslav Yaroslavovych Director of Brody Central City Hospital

Given the unique challenges of building in a conflict zone, the project places a strong emphasis on modularity, trauma-informed design and sustainability.

The hospital’s modular template and easily replicable components helped accelerate the project delivery timeline and reduced both local workforce dependency and waste. With its modularity, the hospital serves as a beacon for similar projects across the country – without significant redesign – moving forward.

Moreover, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in five individuals affected by conflict suffers from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or PTSD. This hospital is more than just a clinical space—it provides an environment of solace, dignity, and healing for children and families affected by war.

Testimonials

  • Helping make this hospital a reality has been inspiring and rewarding both to me personally and CannonDesign as a company. This project sets important new healthcare design standards for Ukraine and reveals how ingenuity can drive new solutions that improve and saves lives across the world. We are proud to know this hospital will now serve generations of children in Ukraine.

Beyond its local impact in Brody, the hospital serves as a scalable model for rebuilding essential infrastructure amidst war, natural disaster or other black swan events across the world. It has been backed by the Clinton Global Initiative and featured by Health @ Davos, Aspen Ideas, The Architect's Newspaper and Fast Company among others.
